UBUNTU for Mac ppc

Asked by dtruitt

Does UBUNTU work on a ppc Mac? I downloaded the image file, burned a CD and was not able to boot from the CD. I have a G4 iMac flatscreen that is running Mac OS X (10.4.9).

When the disc image "ubuntu-6.10-desktop-powerpc.iso" is double-clicked I am told, "The disk image you are opening may be damaged and could damage your system. Reason: no mountable file systems."

Does it work, or not?

That depends on two things:-

1. What book did you buy?

2. What model Mac do you have?

Most books tend to come with the version of Ubuntu for Intel based computers. If you have a modern Mac then it will have an Intel CPU. If you have an older one then it will be based on the PowerPC chip.

The following page may help you identify what CPU is in your Mac.

It's "The Official Ubuntu Book" published by Prentiss-Hall. I loaded
it on a Mac Pro Quad Core under Parallels with no problem. I wanted
to try it on a PPC machine. I have a G5 Quad and a G4 Mirror Drive
that I wanted to try it on, but they don't see the CD at boot. I'm
assuming the CD is only for PCs.

Yes, there's a PPC version and an i386 version and they are different.

You can download the PPC ISO image if you have plenty of bandwidth available.

http://www.ubuntu.com/ --> Desktop --> Download --> (choose a release) --> (choose a mirror location) -->

For example for Ubuntu Dapper (6.06)

Download ubuntu-6.06.1-desktop-i386.iso for an Intel PC or new Mac.
Download ubuntu-6.06.1-desktop-powerpc.iso for a PPC Mac.

Then burn to CD, but make sure you don't burn the actual *file* to CD but use the CD burning software to burn the ISO *image* to CD.

Thanks. I've already downloaded the 6.10 image, but when I try to
burn it, I get an error saying that it is not recognized. Here's the
log entry generated:

Nov 20 16:18:08: Disk Utility started.

Burning Image “ubuntu-6.10-desktop-powerpc.iso”
Unable to burn “ubuntu-6.10-desktop-powerpc.iso”.
not recognized.

I can't view or mount the image, so I assume it it corrupt. I'll try
again with 6.06.
