Not getting support !!

Asked by Rupert

I posted a request for support several weeks ago (Ubuntu ticket #1965) and have yet to receive some kind of feedback.

What gives with the LTS ??

Your assistance with this would be highly appreciated.

Thank you kindly ...

Rupert

Hi Rupert
Please bear in mind that the people answering support tickets are volunteers.

If this service does not provide the support you need,
please have a look at: http://www.ubuntu.com/support/paid

Hi Frode

Thank you for the quick response on this one ... and I do understand
that the support is provided by volunteeers ... but if I undersand you
correctly, you'rte basically telling me that becuase the support is
provided by volunteers, I can only look to getting support if and when
any of those volunteers want to or feel like providing that support
(??) ... and that's not how I understood the support offer when
deciding to switch from Windoze to Ubuntu.

Sorry of I sound about ticekd off - if not synical - but I find it
suprising that this ticket was responded to so quickly, yet the one with
the real query has been lingering for weeks.

Don't take my ranting too seriously - its just that I have a webserver
that I need to get up and running - and the only hold up is this ODBC
issue.

Thank you and kind regards
Rupert

I suspect the reason this ticket has been responded to is because it's easy to answer. As has been pointed out we are all volunteers, so I if nobody has experience of the problem you have then you're going to be out of luck. I personally did look at the ticket, but didn't respond because I don't know the answer. If I did, I would have. You don't really want 20 replies all saying "I don't know" do you?

In answer to your original question LTS means long term support for security fixes and updates. 6.06 is supported for 5 years on the server and 3 years on the desktop. That does NOT mean that we (the volunteers) would stop answering technical support questions about those products after that period of time, just that security updates would no longer be forthcoming.

One reason for the lack of response on your original ticket might be down to the slightly rare hardware and protocol you are using. The combinatino of AS400 and ODBC isn't exactly something you find in most geek houses. I appreciate they may well be popular in the business sense, but I personally have never used an AS400 directly and I've worked in IT for 20 years.

I have however taken another look at it and have asked some questions you might find helpful.
