Super key freezes the PC for 1 minute

Asked by DVasc

Hi to all,
I use Ubuntu 14.04 on my old netbook and all was ok.
Two days ago, after some updates, a strange problem appeared with the Launcher, Dash and Hud.
When I press the Super key, the system freezes for about 1 minute, then the Dash appears but it's really slow, I have to wait for a lot before the icons appears.
The same with the Alt+Tab, about 1 minute to wait, and the Launcher also is very slow.
I am not able to solve this problem, and the same happened on an other old pc about 2-3 months ago (Ubuntu 14.04), so perhaps there is a problems with a driver or library, no idea...
I already tried to reset to default value the settings in Compiz Manager (ccsm), I disabled "blur" and transparency but it did not help.
I disabled also the "online search" for the dash.
The key Super+W seems ok, it works normally.

I add some information :

During and after the freezes no problems are reported in kernel.log or dmesg, and if I use "top" I see that compiz uses about 99% of cpu.

I don't know what to do,
thanks in advance !

If you make a fresh Ubuntu user and log in as that from the login page is it the same?

Hi :-)
Yes, I created now a new user, rebooted, logged in as the new user and the problem is still present.
(With the new user the Launcher is fixed in the left side of the screen and doesn't disappear, it has big icons, like after a fresh install).
I forgot to say that when the pc freezes, I am only able to move the mouse (the pointer moves), the hard disk seems inactive (led is off), and if I press some keys in the dash I have to wait for a lot before the characters appear inside.
This night I will check if there are new Intel i915 drivers available (I upgraded them about 1 months ago).
Thanks !

Hi,
I reinstalled xserver-xorg-video-intel, then I installed the latest i915 driver (i915-3.15-3.13-dkms) but this did not solve the problem.
I will do some other tests, probably in the next days I will report a bug as you suggested.
Thank you for your assistance Andrew !

Hi to all,
I don't know if this can help other users, but I solved the problem reinstalling the "mesa" and other graphics libraries from the standard Ubuntu 14.04 repository.

Infact time ago I added the Intel Graphics Driver repository (https://download.01.org/gfx/ubuntu/14.04/main/ trusty main #Intel Graphics drivers) to upgrade the i915 driver, and all was ok.
But some days ago (2014 august 05) using apt-get upgrade, other libraries were updated from the Intel repository and this caused my problems :

Start-Date: 2014-08-05 12:54:35
Commandline: aptdaemon role='role-commit-packages' sender=':1.96'
Upgrade: libva-tpi1:i386 (1.3.0-2, 1.3.1-3), libopenvg1-mesa:i386 (10.1.3-0ubuntu0.1, 10.2.2-0intel1), libva-x11-1:i386 (1.3.0-2, 1.3.1-3), libglapi-mesa:i386 (10.1.3-0ubuntu0.1, 10.2.2-0intel1), multiarch-support:i386 (2.19-0ubuntu6, 2.19-0ubuntu6.1), libva1:i386 (1.3.0-2, 1.3.1-3), libdrm-intel1:i386 (2.4.52-1, 2.4.54-1), libgles1-mesa:i386 (10.1.3-0ubuntu0.1, 10.2.2-0intel1), libegl1-mesa:i386 (10.1.3-0ubuntu0.1, 10.2.2-0intel1), libgbm1:i386 (10.1.3-0ubuntu0.1, 10.2.2-0intel1), libc6-dbg:i386 (2.19-0ubuntu6, 2.19-0ubuntu6.1), libdrm-radeon1:i386 (2.4.52-1, 2.4.54-1), libosmesa6:i386 (10.1.3-0ubuntu0.1, 10.2.2-0intel1), libc6:i386 (2.19-0ubuntu6, 2.19-0ubuntu6.1), libc6-dev:i386 (2.19-0ubuntu6, 2.19-0ubuntu6.1), libxatracker2:i386 (10.1.3-0ubuntu0.1, 10.2.2-0intel1), libegl1-mesa-drivers:i386 (10.1.3-0ubuntu0.1, 10.2.2-0intel1), libdrm2:i386 (2.4.52-1, 2.4.54-1), libgles2-mesa:i386 (10.1.3-0ubuntu0.1, 10.2.2-0intel1), libdrm-nouveau2:i386 (2.4.52-1, 2.4.54-1), libc-dev-bin:i386 (2.19-0ubuntu6, 2.19-0ubuntu6.1), libva-drm1:i386 (1.3.0-2, 1.3.1-3), xserver-xorg-video-intel:i386 (2.99.910-0ubuntu1, 2.99.911-0intel1), libva-egl1:i386 (1.3.0-2, 1.3.1-3), libva-glx1:i386 (1.3.0-2, 1.3.1-3), libgl1-mesa-dri:i386 (10.1.3-0ubuntu0.1, 10.2.2-0intel1), i965-va-driver:i386 (1.3.0-1ubuntu1, 1.3.2-1), libc-bin:i386 (2.19-0ubuntu6, 2.19-0ubuntu6.1), libwayland-egl1-mesa:i386 (10.1.3-0ubuntu0.1, 10.2.2-0intel1), intel-gpu-tools:i386 (1.6-1, 1.7-1), libgl1-mesa-glx:i386 (10.1.3-0ubuntu0.1, 10.2.2-0intel1)
End-Date: 2014-08-05 12:55:59

These were the Ubuntu's original packets replaced by those coming from Intel repository :

libopenvg1-mesa:i386 (10.1.3-0ubuntu0.1, 10.2.2-0intel1)
libglapi-mesa:i386 (10.1.3-0ubuntu0.1, 10.2.2-0intel1)
libgles1-mesa:i386 (10.1.3-0ubuntu0.1, 10.2.2-0intel1)
libegl1-mesa:i386 (10.1.3-0ubuntu0.1, 10.2.2-0intel1)
libgbm1:i386 (10.1.3-0ubuntu0.1, 10.2.2-0intel1)
libosmesa6:i386 (10.1.3-0ubuntu0.1, 10.2.2-0intel1)
libxatracker2:i386 (10.1.3-0ubuntu0.1, 10.2.2-0intel1)
libegl1-mesa-drivers:i386 (10.1.3-0ubuntu0.1, 10.2.2-0intel1)
libgles2-mesa:i386 (10.1.3-0ubuntu0.1, 10.2.2-0intel1)
xserver-xorg-video-intel:i386 (2.99.910-0ubuntu1, 2.99.911-0intel1)
libgl1-mesa-dri:i386 (10.1.3-0ubuntu0.1, 10.2.2-0intel1)
libwayland-egl1-mesa:i386 (10.1.3-0ubuntu0.1, 10.2.2-0intel1)
libgl1-mesa-glx:i386 (10.1.3-0ubuntu0.1, 10.2.2-0intel1)

To reinstall the old packets I made these operations :

1) Disabled the Intel repository using "Software and updates" tool.
2) Executed : sudo apt-get clean
3) Executed : sudo apt-get update
4) Executed : sudo apt-get install --reinstall libopenvg1-mesa/trusty libglapi-mesa/trusty libgles1-mesa/trusty libegl1-mesa/trusty libgbm1/trusty libosmesa6/trusty libxatracker2/trusty libegl1-mesa-drivers/trusty libgles2-mesa/trusty xserver-xorg-video-intel/trusty libgl1-mesa-dri/trusty libwayland-egl1-mesa/trusty libgl1-mesa-glx/trusty
5) Reboot.

Now all is ok, no more compiz at 100%, the "Dash" and "Launcher" are fast and the Alt+Tab key is working normally :-)

Hi DVasc

I'm seeing the exact same problem, with the same scenario (netbook, intel repository, suddenly going insanely slow and practically freezing on blur/transparency operations like the Superkey or the Shutdown/Reboot dialog) and your information fixed it. ***THANK YOU*** :) I spent two hours trying to diagnose it, without the advantage of older logs to work out where it broke, all I could tell was that compiz was eating up all the available CPU time and doing nothing in those particular situations.

Does this mean you're no longer able to run the updated Intel drivers? Is it perhaps not worth putting something about this problem on the Intel Linux Graphics Installer page? Sounds like something they ought to be made aware of?

Hi Julie,
I am happy that my post was useful !!!
Reinstalling the original Ubuntu's graphic libraries solved this problem only on my old netbook.
But I have the same problem on an other old pc (since about 2 months ago), it doesn't have an Intel video card (it has an AMD Radeon 9550) and it has only original Ubuntu's graphics libraries...
So I don't know what causes these problems, no idea....
I suspect it's related to opengl, I still have to find the time to check logs, to make some tests and open a bug report...
When I find something interesting, I will post here :-)
