There is no Ubuntu 12.1.
There is Ubuntu 12.04 and there was (!) Ubuntu 12.10. The later is not supported anymore.
Ubuntu 12.04 runs on most video card. The 2D desktop even on rather old once: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Unity2D .
If you want to get a new one, check for any recent AMD or nvidia product.
A list of devices supported by the nvidia-current-updates driver in Ubuntu 12.04 can be found at http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux-display-ia32-304.88-driver

Ubuntu 12.10 (I assume you mean this) is EOL and no longer supported.

If your system cannot perform 3D rendering in Compiz, then I can recommend Xubuntu or Lubuntu which are just as supported as Ubuntu in the same suport channels, but do not need a big whizzy GPU just to make the desktop exist.

Oh yeah, Unity2D in 12.04 is awesome if you like the Unity shell. It uses Metacity instead of Compiz and is much lighter and less problematic (in my experience).

Can you help with this problem?
