How do I use the desktop without a mouse & how do I install amouse? I tried turning off the Computer and rebooting

Asked by Ralph

I installed unbuntu on one of my PC's to try it out and the mouse didn't install so I though the mouse was defective so tried another and it doesn't seem to sense there is a mouse. I can't get around the desktop to get into the control panel. Or check anything else. TAB doesn't work What is supposed to and can I install the mouse manually from a DOS prompt?

Reconfigure the X-Server using:-

sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

and then select the mouse type that closely matches your mouse, after that is done see if your mouse works.

I tried my USB mouse and it work immediatel when plugged in but I'm not sure what you are saying. How can I reconfigure the Xserver. Do you mean use dos commands
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
and before doing that find out what kind of mouse I have. Its a light emitting type that reads the light as in passes over anything it is on.

Howdy Mike-d. here,
(disclaimer)
I usually just file bug reports and and sometimes I'm not very good at that either.
This DOS prompt you would use in Linux would actually be in a terminal window. At a prompt like this: root@AMD1Ghz-desktop:~# , and using Python, and other computer code, limited Dos Commands work here, some are a little different.
But, before that, try restarting your computer by shutting it down and plugging in you mouse. Push or hold the Power button for 4 seconds if you have to.
Plug in you mouse, and restart computer, if not go. ShutDown and try your other mouses. I there don't work either, and if it is a U.S.B. mouse, check your Bios setting at computer start-up to make sure U.S.B. mouse is enabled or legacy hardware is enable.
Also, If you have a Live Ubuntu C.D. one that you can start the computer with and test without installing it, does the mouse or mice work there?
To get to terminal is tricky without mouse, easier to switch to a terminal screen. While your computer is on, Press <Ctrl>+<Alt>+<F1> to get back <Ctrl>+<Alt>+<F7>. There is different terminal screens built in free to try them <Ctrl>+<Alt>+<F2> through<F12>, if you get lost, restarting computer will put you back into Windows-like graphical user interface gui-mode instead of terminal text mode. O.k. while in the terminal screen, enter login user name and password then try:

your will differ, your user's name @ your computer's-Desktop's name:~#

Good Luck, ask for more info, if you need more info.
