Install of ubuntu 14.04 cannot configure graphics card

Asked by Nicholas

The intallation of Ubuntu 14.04 LTS does not properly configure the graphics card and instead just uses the basic set of functions and resolutions. It does not recognise the laptop built-in display as a different display to a connected LCD display, and the set of available resolutions are very low and wrong aspect ratio.

This is a totally fresh install from a DVD disc to harddrive.

I was prevously running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS with nouveau driver (3.11.0-26-generic) and was absolutely flawless. I'm only changing because 12.04 is not being supported.

[EDIT: This last sentence about 12.04 support is not correct. See links below in the comments for details]

How can I get the 14.04 noveau driver to properly configure the graphics card?

Laptop: Toshiba Satellite Pro P-100 model PSPAGA-014001
Graphics card: Nvidia G71M GeForce Go 7900 GTX
Connected LCD: Samsung model S27B350H

The output from the graphics troubleshooting procedure is as follows:

If you run:

sudo apt-get install nvidia-current; sudo nvidia-xconfig

Then reboot, is it ok?

I have tried installing nvidia driver(s) and on reboot is ok, but after putting password in get a black screen and cannot do anything. The only solution left then is a total re-install. I would prefer no to install nvida driver.

I'm only changing because 12.04 is not being supported. This is your statement. Please read site below. Third line.

Thanks for pointing me to the releases.
Can I please clarify - I was using 12.04.4 which has a EOL of Aug 2014 (now). See here:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/LTSEnablementStack

When I upgrade / install to 12.04.5 or to 14.04 (Trusty stack) I encounter the problem above for whatever reason.
So, I need to install 12.04.1 (Precise stack) and that is supported till Aug 2017?

Whatever is best for you. If you can take time to fix problem, I think 14.04 is better. But if you need computer up and running, 12.04 that was running, will probability be better.

If you go to
http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/

You will notice Precise is not listed. Precise is LTS and supported til April 2017. Someone has updated the wiki incorrectly

I have editied my original question to show my statement on Ubuntu 12.04 support was incorrect. These followup answers have solved my problem. Thanks.
