Inability to update an encryption for my drive----loopback network issue

Asked by Laetitia Aby

I noticed that loopback is set up on my network, and I am trying to find a way to get that halted. There is also the issue of multicasting to various points. See how you can advise me. Thank you.

sudo ifdown lo

But you might experience some trouble with several services that rely on the loopback interface.

Thank you for your previous answer.

I got this response: ifdown: "interface lo not configured"

A few things:

1/ lo is not configured is one thing

2/ secondly, I was not able to also set or reset a password for root and config it. Any thoughts?

3/Why would services rely on the loopback in general?

Im trying to think of any service that would require it at all.

I am only browsing, I barely do any media work on here these days.

5/ Any idea about a good program anti hacker, or something anti phishing in the store area?

I appreciate your help. Thank you.

1. Why do you think that an inability to update an encryption for your drive might have anything to do with the loopback network device, and that disabling the loopback device would help?

see e.g. http://askubuntu.com/questions/247625/what-is-the-loopback-device-and-how-do-i-use-it

2. You should not set a password for the root user, but use the sudo mechanism instead

see e.g. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RootSudo

5. The best defense against phishing attacks is skepticism whenever you get a request per e-mail, and common sense.

Can you help with this problem?
