Yes, you can keep the PPA unchecked.

Actually, the more PPA's you use or enable, the more likely you risk destabilizing the Ubuntu install.

My approach is to only enable 1 PPA at a time, to avoid conflicts between several PPA repositories.

Once I have installed the PPA package that I need, I immediately disable the PPA afterwards (to minimize risks).
