Display issue

Asked by ESP07

I am attempting to install 7.10, I am running a 2.60G HT processor, 512 MB ram, 120GB HDD, INTEL 82865 Graphics Controller. I have created the disk from the ISO, I also have a 32 bit CD from one of the commercial suppliers. I can run from the CD, BUT if I boot from the CD to install, I get to the screen with the options to run or install etc.I did read some previous answers and they didn't seem to have this issue. I did note one answer suggested using the F6 key to enter the options, but when I press F6 NOTHING happens, (same with F5 & F4, But F1,2,3 all work fine). As soon as I tell it to install I get a quick flash saying the linux kernel is starting, and then a message I can't see as it flashes too quickly. Then my monitor displays garbled lines of colors, on the top approx 2/3 of the screen then different colored lines on the bottom 1/3, and the system freezes in this state. It is completely unreadable so i have NO idea what info may/may not be there. I can hit ctrl/alt/delete to reboot but same happens with BOTH disks. I have tried changing the resolution the refresh rate medium 16 bit as well as Highest 32 bit, and nothing seems to correct it. I downloaded the tar.gz driver for the intel controller for LINUX from INTEL and it is on my desktop.

Obviously seeing that I am just trying to install my LINUX experience is next to NIL...LOL ANY assistance would be greatly appreciated. TIA.

You should give the alternate install CD a try, chances are it will work fine, since it can install in text mode, then configure itself properly for your gfx adapter.

Howdy Mike-d. here,
(disclaimer) I usually just file bug reports and I'm only so good at that, but here's what has worked for me.
It sounds like at least one of your C.D.'s is a Live C.D. meaning that you can use Linux without installing it first, only booting off it. If so this is good. Choose run, after it loads up, double click on install icon on desktop. (If it starts up o.k. in Live c.d. mode), my experience has been that it is more likely to work without many issues.
I also have a question about when it seems locked up. Does pressing <Ctrl+<Alt>+<F1> give you a terminal text window or screen ? If not try pressing <Ctrl+<Alt>+<F2>...<F3>through<F12>. Is there is an option to login in. Oh, never mind, I think you might not of made it to this point yet. But if you did, look up how to reconfigure X, or somebody tell 'em.

The issue has now been resolved, I connected the PC to my 42" LCD and it comes up just fine, I am guessing it just did not like my DELL monitor which is an older CRT type, so Thanks folks I am now able to run the installation etc...
