Touchpad is detected as Mouse after Hardware change by Dell

Asked by Prolansys

Hi,

I am using Ubuntu 12.04 LTS on Dell Vostro 1550 machine. A motnth back Dell engineers changed my touchpad. Since then I am not able to configure the touchpad. I need to disable it while typing.

niladri@PL-L01:~$ xinput list
⎡ Virtual core pointer id=2 [master pointer (3)]
⎜ ↳ Virtual core XTEST pointer id=4 [slave pointer (2)]
⎜ ↳ PS/2 Generic Mouse id=12 [slave pointer (2)]
⎣ Virtual core keyboard id=3 [master keyboard (2)]
↳ Virtual core XTEST keyboard id=5 [slave keyboard (3)]
    ↳ Power Button id=6 [slave keyboard (3)]
    ↳ Video Bus id=7 [slave keyboard (3)]
    ↳ Power Button id=8 [slave keyboard (3)]
    ↳ Sleep Button id=9 [slave keyboard (3)]
    ↳ Integrated Webcam id=10 [slave keyboard (3)]
↳ AT Translated Set 2 keyboard id=11 [slave keyboard (3)]
↳ Dell WMI hotkeys id=13 [slave keyboard (3)]
niladri@PL-L01:~$

I have also done the following steps:
Download psmouse-alps-1.3: http://www.dahetral.com/public-download/alps-psmouse-dlkm-for-3-2-and-3-5/view Then (using sudo / root):

Extract the folder psmouse-alps-1.3 to /usr/source
cd to /usr/source
dkms add psmouse-alps-1.3
dkms autoinstall

However
sudo rmmod psmouse && modprobe psmouse returned error

sudo rmmod psmouse && modprobe psmouse
ERROR: Module psmouse does not exist in /proc/modules

Please help in configuring the touchpad.

Touchpad is working fine, USB mouse is also working - The problem is that we are not able to configure the touchpad or disable the touchpad while typing.

Disabling Touchpad while Typing
Go to System > Preferences > Mouse > Touchpad and uncheck 'Disable touchpad while typing' and 'Enable mouse clicks with touchpad'.
