Wireless Router for Ubuntu 14.04 LTS

Asked by Tinman

I'm a newly turned Linux user running Ubuntu 14.04 LTS with a 10 Mbps satellite modem (eth0). I want to add a wireless router so my sister can access the internet on her laptop. So I have several questions for all you smart guys/gals out there.

1. Do I need a router that has Linux drivers included/available?
2. What is the best router for Ubuntu/Linux?
3. Does the router have a pass-through directly to my computer so I don't have to use wireless? (Like, I'm already connected through my ethernet card and don't want my computer wireless)
4. What other hardware will I need to run a router?
5. Any other tidbits of information I will need?

I thank you all who takes the time to answer my questions. I did a search on this site for some of my answers but there were "Other circumstances" that didn't apply to me.

1. No, routers work without drivers.
2. All of them will do the work, they just differ in price and features.
3. Most routers have.
4. All you need should come with it. In a few case you don't get a network cable with the router, then (and only then) you would need one sonce you need two now (modem → router and router → PC)
5. No, just ask the dealer of your choice for a wireless router, make sure he gives you some options in price and features.

During some of my research I saw that one thing to look for in a Linux router is DD-WRT.

One router I'm looking at "http://www.amazon.com/Linksys-WRT54GL-Wireless-G-Broadband-Router/dp/B000BTL0OA" offeres -G and -B devices. Is there any anything else I should consider?

Routers obey defacto standards so any system can connect to any router. You don't need drivers for the router. As long as the network device has drivers (in ANY OS) the router will work.

If you get a wireless router then swap it with the current one and set it up so that it works with your ISP. You can then connect the Ubuntu system as you do now and wireless will work too.

Can you help with this problem?
