making kde default

Hello friends,

I just lobe ubuntu and obtained kubuntu and edubuntu as well. However, after printing the kubunto desktop manual I want to make de kde the default system. How do I go about it?

If you have installed Ubuntu (GNOME) and would like to have Kubuntu (KDE) instead then you have two options.

1) Re-install
or
2) Install the kubuntu-desktop package using Synaptic package manager.

If you choose option 1 then you will lose whatever you have already done on the machine. If you choose option 2 then you will have ubuntu and kubuntu installed which means that you can choose between KDE and GNOME using the session menu at the logon screen. It also means that you will have all the GNOME applications and the KDE ones installed, along with their libraries. So when updates come out you'll get the GNOME and the KDE ones. That means potentially more downloads for you to worry about.

Potentially after you have installed the kubuntu-desktop package you should be able to remove the ubuntu-desktop package but I am not sure if this will cleanly get rid of all the GNOME stuff having not tried it myself.

If you've not got any data on the machine then the best course of action might be to just start again with Kubuntu. The choice is yours. :)

Alan no removing ubuntu-desktop will not remove everything. you would need deborphan for that maybe aptitude will do it but i doubt it. your next best thing is to see if autoremove wants to remove all packages installed with ubuntu-desktop. personally i would leave both as some people have had issues installing kubuntu-desktop than removing gnome* apps than net connection doesnt work or ssh dont work and alot of others i have seen. im still not sure why kde isnt sharing gnomes settings. for things like net connection and screen res.

In that case he's probably better off re-installing then.

Thanks for that. I was sure I'd used autoremove to get rid of *buntu-desktop but I think it was the one I had added, not the one that was originally installed.
