Can't Install Ubuntu

Asked by Monkey

Hello,

Recently i wanted to install Ubuntu on one of the PC's at my house but i failed to do so. I downloaded Ubuntu 7.10, burned it to a CD and then inserted it to the PC after i restarted i chose the "Start or Install Ubuntu" option and it came up with a box saying "Loading Linux Kernal 7%". After a while it did nothing and came up with another box saying "I/0 error Error reading boot CD.".

I later used an alternate desktop CD the text-based installer everything worked perfectly until it came to the "Installing the base system" section. It came up with a message saying;

"[!!] Install the base System
Debootstrap warning
Warning:
file:///cdrom/pool/main/libg/libgpg-error/libgpg-error0_1.4-2ubuntu1_i386.deb was corrupt"

I clicked Continue and it instantly came up with another message saying;

"[!!] Install the base system
Deboot warning
Warning: couldn't download package libgpg-error0"

I clicked Continue again and it instantly came up with another message saying;

"[!!] Install the base system
Debootstrap warning
Warning: file:///cdrom/pool/main/libi/libidn/libidn11_1.0-0_i386.deb was corrupt"

There was hell of a lot more messages when i kept clicking Continue but i really don't have the time to type up all of them.

Try burning again with another disc and before installing, check for CD defects from the initial installation menu.

To get the latest version of Ubuntu, currently version 7.10(2007.October), head on over to http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu Then once you download the ISO image, check the ISO image to ensure that it was downloaded properly following https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM Then follow the directions for burning the ISO image to disk at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto
Once the CD is finished burning, you may want to check the integrity of the CD on the machine that you will be installing to following the instructions at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/CDIntegrityCheck

Please let me know what step fails for you. The most important one before burning is checking the md5sum, if that isn't correct you could burn it 100 times and it will still fail.

Best Regards,
Williamts99

I had the same problem on several machines. On two, I changed the NIC card to a standard like 3COM or Reltek 8029 series. This allowed me to load linux. Each machine that I had a hardware problem either stopped at 15% or would not boot off the cd.

Hello,

I really appreciate your responses.

@williamts99: I downloaded winMD5Sum, compared the hashes and they both seem to be the exact same.

@JPoff: Is the NIC card the Network Adapter? By changing this will it make a difference? Thanks.

Hi,

How about the integrity check ("Check CD for defect" in installation menu)? Did you pass the check successfully?

Funny things happened to me in the past. My perfectly good DVD writer could not make through the installation complaining corrupt reading. Swapping with other CDROM drive solved it.

In some other case I used a CD-RW media which caused the problem as well.
Then after I re-burn it on a CDR, it works.

Can you help with this problem?
