Unwanted Icon in lense applications

Asked by Lawrence Blanc

I have an annoying icon (the same penguin icon as JDK Iced Tea app uses) from an unwanted instant messenger who wanted to chat in a chatroom. I've never had any other chatroom users get saved as an application on my computer. I have an idea it must be something to do with JDK Iced tea as its the same icon. I've used all the search and locate tools, been through just about evry file and cache, have uninstalled JDK and Adobe flash then reinstalled, tried to purge but can't seem to find where this rogue file is. Any ideas on how I can get rid of the icon or find the file to delete it?

The icon does absolutely nothing when I launch it or click on it. I'm using Ubuntu 14.04. Any help is deeply appreciated. I have tried all the suggestions in the forum but simply can't locate the file relating to this icon.
Cheers

Can you please give us a screenshot of the issue. You will need to use imageshack or similar to make a URL of the image.

Thanks

here's a scren shot of the lense, the icon I'm trying to delete is the grey penguin (carol 48 uk), which is highlighted in the shot. As I said, when clicked nothing happens.
Cheers

What is the output of:

grep -i carol /usr/share/applications/*

If anything?

Thanks

Same command as Andrew suggested, but with a different directory:

What is the output of:

grep -i carol ~/.local/share/applications/*

I think you found the item Manfred, can I go ahead and delete it? Thanks for helping to locate the item. When I navigate to the folder the name is only shown as "sun-applet-pluginmain.desktop". I've learned more about grep too.
cheers

/home/lawrence/.local/share/applications/sun-applet-pluginmain.desktop:Name=carol uk 48

See if it is in a package first. What is the output of:

dpkg -S sun-applet-pluginmain.desktop

If you get no output then run:

sudo rm /usr/share/applications/sun-applet-pluginmain.desktop

And it will go. If a package is named, uninstall it and the icon will go.

Thank you, the sudo rm line did the trick. Problem solved. I'm not sure how it got there in the first place but it must have something to do with either JAVA JDK Iced Tea or parachat. Thanks again
