Ubuntu 7.10 - BOINC 5.10.28

Asked by fuy

How can I request the BOINC package available in Ubuntu 7.10 to be updated to the latest stable build (5.10.28) ?
I'm not sure if I should submit this as a bug.

Thanks for this question.

The BOINC packages for Ubuntu 8.04 are build 5.10.30-5. So you will be able to upgrade to Hardy Herron when it is released in April. I doubt there will be a backport for gutsy 7.10.

I hope this helps.

I suppose this should do then. Is this the "way it works" for Ubuntu in general ?
Once a version is released only bugs are fixed ? No programs are updated ?

Yes, in general, the purpose of Ubuntu releases is to maintain stability in each release. Upgrades of packages often jeopardise this aim. Therefore backports have a strict control. Mostly, it security issues allow the upgrade of a published release.

Here is some more information about this process: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates

Hope this helps.

There is a group that does update new versions of programs. Its called backports. You will need to enable the backport repositories in order to get them. If you want a program to be backported to 7.10 you have to request it with them. You can go here for more info: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuBackports
