System slowdown and I don't know why!

Asked by zebcowboy

I have an alienware area 51m sentia with 1 gb of ram and a 1.79 ghz celeron processor and 20 gbs on my hard drive devoted to ubuntu 7.10 and I removed windows xp so ubuntu is the only os I want on this system. I have tried to install it twice now and after the second full reinstall it would not even load. I know it is the hardware because the computer is not even working hard, just the os, everything is slow and some things wont run at all. In case you can not tell, I know nothing of linux and this is completely new to me so I might have done something wrong.

What do you mean exactly by running slow? Things down open quickly or is the screen jumpy?
Also use something like htop (just type htop in console) to see if anything is hogging memory or processor power. If it is, post it here.

I have reinstalled ubuntu for the third time and I think it is doing better cause it is actually installing the updates, but I have no clue what I am doing, and it shows when you ask me to type htop into the consol and my response is what is consol lol

The console is where you enter commands using the command line :-) You can access it from Applications>Accessories>Terminal

Or if you want a graphical tool to look at the processes, go to System>Admin>System Monitor and see what is taking up a lot of resources.

Thanks for the help. The CPU usage stays around 10% and the ram at 33%, after the installation of all the updates, it ran smoother I think, but it still hangs up even though the CPU is not showing any more useage. That is all I got, let me know if this is weird or not, and hopefully I will learn enough about Ubuntu to help some one else the way you have helped me.
