update package crashed 12.10

Asked by heinrich du plooy

12.10 ran smoothly for a few months on my 486 processor, today I decided to update the 500 updates available, after the update the system started to install the changes, unfortunately something happend and the system crashed. I rebooted the cpu, and logged in as usual, the previous desktop background was still there but all the files and menubars has desipeared. I discovered, while the machine is booting, I'll press shift and F1 wherafter the machine goes into the safemode options. What do I do now?

Please read this:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases

Ubuntu 12.10 is end-of-life and not supported anymore since May 16, 2014.

I strongly suggest looking for an alternative that is still supported.

It all depends on your PC's exact specifications, including how much RAM it has.

Maybe PuppyLinux or some other mini-distro is a better fit...

Mark

I made a startup disk of 14.04 on usb stick and installed it. My adsl line was intermittend while trying to update 12.10 which caused the boot loader to be corrupted.

Up and running on 14.04, thanks for the intrest.
