Laptop speakers will not play sound

Asked by Chad

I have Ubuntu 14.04 and my laptop speakers have stopped playing audio. It worked fine, I connected to a Bkuetooth speaker and then switching back to a normal speaker audio no longer works. ALSAMIXER won't let me change speaker volume either. It seems as though things are locked on my HDMI out. Latitude e7440.

Hello,

Thanks for the replies. I've restarted multiple times since the problem began. Here is a link to the output of running

wget -O alsa-info.sh http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-info.sh && chmod +x ./alsa-info.sh && ./alsa-info.sh --upload

If you run :

alsamixer

Are all levels cranked and unmuted? Use F6 to check you are manipulating the right device. Also use the sound application in Dash and do the same.

Hello,

So I was using Windows all day on my laptop for work and then get home and rebooted into Ubuntu. The sound randomly started working again. To answer the question about alsa mixer when I go in therer I hit F6 to select the corrrect device. I cannot change the volume for speakers - they show "00" with. no bar above it. Everything else can be changed. The volume buttons on the laptop itself seem to be working fine for controlling the volume.

Gah...It worked all of last evening and I shut the computer down knowing I would need to boot to Windows for a bit to use Outlook and then I restarted back to Ubuntu and the speakers are off again. Same deal in AlsaMixer where speaker volum is set to "00" not "mm" but you can't adjust the volume up or down.

Try installing pulseaudio volumle control, perhaps?
It's helped me a lot, HDMI sound was always disabled by default on my new PC.
You can install it with:

sudo apt-get install pavucontrol

then you can launch it with : pavucontrol
and it will let you enable and disable HDMI sound fairly easily (if it says unplugged, go to the config tab, and select a pofile that doesn't have unplugged in the name).

Hope this helps,
Hamish

Thank you for the information about pavucontrol. It didn't exactly solve the problem but it did give me an idea. I went into my BIOS and disabled HDMI and once I started UBUNTU back up the sound was working and the HDMI device no longer shows up in pavucontrol as even being an option.
