dpkg: unrecoverable fatal error, aborting: reading files list for package 'linux-headers-3.13.0-29-lowlatency': Input/output error Error in function:

Asked by Johan

Hi All,

 I need some help please.
Used Ubuntu Tweak to cleanup system. Don't know if it broke something, but now I can do no updates. I get this error report:- "dpkg: unrecoverable fatal error, aborting:
reading files list for package 'linux-headers-3.13.0-29-lowlatency': Input/output error
Error in function: "
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Distribution:- 14.04 Trusty
Looked all over but can't see a solution to my specific problem.
Thank you.

Have tried this is what I get:-

~$ sudo apt-get --reinstall install linux-headers-3.13.0-29-lowlatency

You might want to run 'apt-get -f install' to correct these:

linux-image-lowlatency : Depends: linux-image-3.13.0-29-lowlatency but it is not going to be installed
E: Unmet dependencies. Try 'apt-get -f install' with no packages (or specify a solution).

Tried your link, this is the report I get from the first command:-
~$ sudo cp -arf /var/lib/dpkg /var/lib/dpkg.backup
[sudo] password for johan:
cp: error reading ‘/var/lib/dpkg/info/linux-headers-3.13.0-29-lowlatency.list’: Input/output error
cp: failed to extend ‘/var/lib/dpkg.backup/info/linux-headers-3.13.0-29-lowlatency.list’: Input/output error

chmod +x ./fixpackage :- ~$ chmod +x ./fixpackage
chmod: cannot access ‘./fixpackage’: No such file or directory
johan@oortjies:~$

Any thing else I can do to help you solve my predicament? Thanks for trying to help me, much appreciated.

You seem to have a file system error on your hard disk.
I recommend you boot into a LiveSystem (an Ubuntu installation DVD or USB stick in the 'try Ubuntu without installing' mode)and perform a file system check on your hard disk's file system(s).
