inability to access "epkowa" scanner driver for epson V33 scanner

I have a new Ubuntu 14.04 system to which I am unable to connect an Epson V33 Perfection scanner. I had the scanner operating under 14.04 on my old box but it will not work on the new machine. I am trying to run Xsane but the error I am being returned is " Failed to open device 'epkowa:interpreter:003:006':Error during device I/O" . The scanner is connected using USB and of course is turned on.

Before attempting to run Xsane I have loaded the following files:
iscan-data_1.15.0-2_all.deb
icc-profiles_2.0.1-1_all.deb
iscan_2.28.1-3.ltdl7_amd64.deb
esci-interpreter-perfection-v330_0.2.0-1_amd64.deb

Each file runds without any indicated error.

If you run :

sudo xsane

Is it ok? (Sudo is now ok with GUI applications. They fixed it with polkit)

I received a dire warning about running it with sudo and when I continued it behaved exactly the same as when I ran it normally.

Present situation is that after a fresh boot, if Xsane is started it "finds" the scanner operates it very briefly then closes giving the error "Failed to open device 'epkowa:interpreter:003:006' Error during device I/O"

I have tried one different USB port to no effect but I have several others I could (and will) try. It may be of interest that my machine is set up for dual boot to Windows 8.1. If I boot into Windows the scanner works normally. This would suggest that I do not have a hardware problem I think.

The dual boot setup has Windows on one 256G SSD and Ubuntu on a separate 256G SSD so there should not be any crossover between them. Grub seems happy with that arrangement too.

I also have 1TB and 2TB data drives. Both these are formatted to EXT4.

At this time I do not have a spare cable for the scanner as it uses the "square" USB plug and I don't have any other devices with this type of cable.

I have now been able to rest all the USB ports on my machine with the scanner. There are 6 ports on the back of the machine. Four are USB 3.0 and two are USB 2.0/1.1. I have 3 USB ports on the front of the machine 2 are USB 3.0 and 1 is USB 2.0

After a cold boot I attached the scanner to what I believe is a USB 2.0 port and the system initiated, Xsane ran and I was able to scan a document successfully (colour). I continued to test other ports with the machine reporting I/O errors for all the other ports (including those I believed to be USB 2.0/1.1. I then tried putting the scanner back into the original USB 2.0 port and IT reported an I/O error.

All ports seem to work normally with the scanner when I am using Windows 8.1.

I am truely at a loss to see what is happening.

It would seem I am having some problems with my USB ports but I have no idea hw to deal with it. Strangely all my other usb based devices are happy.

IT would seem I have solved my problem. Thanks to help from the Xsane community. They advised turning the XHCI option in my BIOS off (disabled) and problem has gone away. It would seem that Ubuntu 14.04 does not handle USB 3.0 very well. Fortunately I do not rely upon USB 3.0 at this stage of my career.

The Linux kernel could handle USB 3 since 2.6.31 and runs great on my systems.
