Could Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (Desktop) be installed without disturbing ‘/home’ partition?

Asked by Navin Talati

Friends,

In my machine, a 1 TB hdd is kept exclusively for Linux distro. I am using Ubuntu. Ubuntu 12.04 LTS was installed in it with following partition structure. (later on the ubuntu versions were upgraded to 13.04 and 13.10 directly through update manager/upgrading online.

Partitions detail:
Sda1 /boot ext4 3 Gb
Sda2 / ext4 35 Gb
Sda4 Swap 12 Gb
Sda7 /home ext4 160 Gb
Sda5 NTFS 350 Gb (as data partition)
Sda6 NTFS 400 Gb (as data partition)

As I have kept some data in 'home' partition also which I do not want to disturb. And I want to install a new LTS version Ubuntu 14.04 from Installation DVD (which is prepared/burnt from .iso download of this version).

Please guide me for the following:

(1). Can I install Ubuntu 14.04 LTS from the installation DVD keeping ‘Sda7, /home, ext4, 160 Gb’ partition undisturbed? ( sizes of all the partitions are also to be kept the same as above and not to be altered)

(2). New installation will not create a new ‘/home’ partition automatically or by default ?

(3). What care have I to take for this?

With best regards to all in anticipation.

If you use the 'something else' option in the installer, you can delete the old OS partitions and make new ones, you can then mrk your /home partition to be used as /home but NOT to format it, set the rest up. If you use the same name as your first user then the directories will be fine.

The 'something else' option is also known as the "custom partitioning" option in the installation routine.

I use custom partitioning and ask the installer to NOT format the /home partition during the install.

I have been using this method for years and it works fine. So actionparsnip is right.

Thanks 'actionparsnip' and 'Mark' at #1 and #2 respectively. I shell follow your instruction and take care not to format the '/home' and keep the computer and user's name same. On applying this change, results will be communicated on this thread for linux community.
Meanwhile, I would like to know about the partitions notations. As per my question, the system has following partitions.
Partitions detail:
Sda1 /boot ext4 3 Gb
Sda2 / ext4 35 Gb
Sda4 Swap 12 Gb
Sda7 /home ext4 160 Gb
Sda5 NTFS 350 Gb (as data partition)
Sda6 NTFS 400 Gb (as data partition)

Here, partitions are identified by the system/installation from Sda1 to Sda7, except Sda3. As I understand that any HDD can be partitioned into max. 4 PRIMERY parts. Here I have tried for 3 PRIMARY and remaining LOGICAL (i.e. sub-partition of 4 th ). But Sda3 is not appearing anywhere. Why so? (Is my understanding missing something or wrong?)

Secondly, What should I do to keep sequence uniform ? i.e. Sda1 to Sda4 for Linux ( /boot, /, Swap, and /home )and Last TWO as Sda5 and Sda6 for NTFS type. can I do this while installing Ubuntu 14.04 LTS as above?

Thanks all in anticipation.

You could just keep the partitions as they are and mark them as to be formatted (but not /home).

Btw 3Gb for /boot is massive. You only need a few hundred megabytes. How many kernels do you need?

(1)
As per your suggestion, I shell reduce the '/boot' partition to 1 GB (instead of 3 GB), will it be ok?

(2)
I shell keep the partitions as they are and mark them as to be formatted except '/home' (i.e as I understand, I have to tick-mark the boxes for formatting against '/boot', ' /', & 'Swap', and not to mark the box for formatting against '/home' - Is it right?).

(3)
Will this keep or create the sequence of these partitions as Sda1 to Sda4 for Linux ( /boot, /, Swap, and /home and Last TWO as Sda5 and Sda6 for NTFS type ?
OR
should I need to change some notations somewhere therein? (presently there are 7 such partitions from Sda1 to Sda7 but Sda3 is not appearing anywhere ! How can I rectify this? or Why so?

Thanks you all in anticipation.

You don't actually need a separate /boot partition but yes 1Gb is more than enough.

The sequence will probably be kept but it's not important.

Yes mark the other partitions to be formatted. Then mark the others to be used for the same folders as you did initially.

As per #5 para (2), I installed a fresh Ubuntu 14.04 LTS Desktop - i386. The /home partition alng with TWO ntfs are kept intaked as they were not ticked for formating. So my data are on desktop in the earlier verson are safe.

I did not changed sizes of the any of the partition jus to avoid any problem at the cost of my data. So the /boot partition is 3 BG as it was earlier.

Sequences in Sda1 to Sda7 remained as it was. Sda3 is not appearing.

Till now OS works nicely.
Additionally I installed VLC, GIMP, Blender, Inkscape, Furious ISO Mount, Brasero Disc Burner, 7zip, Google-Earth, etc

Thank you all for the valued guidance
