No Sounds in Ubuntu 7.10

Asked by E.A. Clough

I have looked at question #22831 and followed the recommended links, especially the excellent 'Trouble Shooting' link, without solving my problem.

I have a new Eclipse Titan Intel core 2 duo notebook with Realtek HD sound, first dual booted with XP PRO and Ubuntu 7.10, reproducing the system I had on my old Dell Inspiron 5000 notebook, and now with Ubuntu 64 mounted on another partition. The problem is the same with both Linux OS's.

Volume Control shows 0: HDA intel (Alsa mixer 1: Realtek ID 268 (OSS Mixer)

With Alsa Mixer selected, the state of the following is shown:

Headphone, PCM, Front, Front mic, Mic, IEC958, Input So, Input So, Speaker.

1) PCM and the two InputSo have no 'Mute' box.
2) IEC958 and the two Input So have no Slider

All available Mute boxes and Sliders are active, ie they can be changed. I have tried muting various things and changing sliders without getting sounds.

XP Pro sounds are fine.

Please let me know if there is any other information which may help to pinpoint the problem.

I should particularly concerned if you think this could be a hardware fault.

Hello there. HDA intel is a popular chipset, luckily there is a wealth of information available on troubleshooting this chipset. Please see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Gutsy_Intel_HD_Audio_Controller and https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HdaIntelSoundHowto for steps to troubleshoot/re-set up alsa for your sound device.

Try this and update us on any progress.

Hope this helps.

In my 64 bit partition , I first tried the Gutsy Intel HD Audio Controller J method but the config failedgiving me a rather long config log. Then, after downloading 'module -assistant', I tried method A whichproduceda long and apparently successful sequence of changes but did not activate sounds. Then, in desperation (because my notebook is not by Acer), I added the line 'options snd-hda-intel model=c=acer' to the file /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base and that gave me glorious sound.

Thank you sno.

Sorry, the line should have read 'option snd-hda-intel model=acer'
