write permissions 12.04 server edition

I have installed 12.04 server edition and uploaded some content to /var/www but when I open it in a browser I get a list instead of the web page i loaded.
I placed my wan ip in static in the conf file it is accessable from outside my network except it doesn't simply open my page.

Who is the owner of the data? You can use:

ls -la /path/to/filename

To check ownership and ACL.

Have you also tried restarting the webserver service, probably with:

sudo service httpd restart

Sorry as usual the mistake was between the chair and keyboard. lol I forgot to name the file index.html once that was done it works like magic.
