Can't mount a 4GB USB NTFS pen drive.

Asked by Mina

I've wrote all about it here actually http://askubuntu.com/questions/471264/cant-mount-a-usb-pen-drive . I can copy and paste the contents here but it looks much better on askubuntu. ...I can do it if you ask me.

...The last thing I've reached is that when I try mounting it, it gives out an error "NTFS signature is missing". How can I deal with that?

by the way I don't care about the USB's contents and I want to format it but I just wanna do some debugging before formatting.

When you last unplugged the device, did you use the safe removal feature in your OS or did you just pull it out?

I really can't remember. I'll go connect it to windows again and "safe remove" it and I'll reply again if things are fixed.

But by the way even if I didn't safe remove it, windows can read it perfectly well. "Ubuntu should do the same"

No because NTFS is propriatary to Microsoft. The NTFS acces you so readily enjoy is by a LOT of hard work and effort by the ntfs-3g guys. Microsoft's OSes know EXACTLY how to access and manage NTFS when users misuse their hardware. The dirty removal causes issues in Linux and is why it is the first thing I ask. My guess is that you didn't use it like so many Windows users don't.

re-mounting that drive in Windows and doing a chkdisk there might also be worth trying.

I got kinda bad news.

I safe removed it but It wasn't fixed so I started messing around. I used testdisk to "fix it". yeah I can now see its contents on linux but then I tried booting the windows xp installer from it but it couldn't boot. gives errors. (yes it could boot before). I messed it up. sorry. ...sadly I didn't try doing a chkdsk in the first place.

Can you help with this problem?
