User-friendly HRTF button?

Asked by Tiago Matono

Hi. So today I tried the openal HRTF. It works wonderfully! All my games and movies play with awesome 3d sound through my headphones. To activate it I simply ran "echo "hrtf = true" >> ~/.alsoftrc " in the terminal as explained here: http://www.bitoutsidethebox.com/shabda/hrtf-info/

Now my question: Why is this so easy-to-implement function not included somewhere in ubuntu through a simple checkbox? Can this be implemented? Maybe a simple checkbox under "sound settings" that would only appear and be activateable when headphones are connected. I think this is an awesome and easy to implement feature. Where can I suggest this?

Thanks in advance

This is not a bug though... It's a feature that, in my opinion, should be patched in.

OpenAL does have its own GUI config, and the HRTF checkbox is available in the latest development version.

Proof: http://repo.or.cz/w/openal-soft.git/blob/cd983245f1967e04f833acc0ec27aefa94f061b0:/utils/alsoft-config/mainwindow.cpp#l225

Unfortunately, OpenAL hasn't made any releases in a year and a half (and Debian/Ubuntu is even using a slightly older version).

Trying to get someone to add an OpenAL-specific option to the general pulseaudio options sounds like a dead-end.
It would be far better if OpenAL made a release (development is very active) and Debian/Ubuntu updated...

Thank you for your answer! I had no idea that it was available in the development version of openal. How can I access the openal gui? I didn't know there was one.
