14.04 Flash videos are choppy in Firefox and Chrom

Asked by Christian Carriere

I finally have a bit of time to try and fix the Flash issues in Ubuntu 14.04. When i play Flash and HTML 5 videos in Firefox and Chrom the video and the audio are very choppy. A bit like hitting the pause/play button every seconds. Videos and sound play fine in VLC.

I did a manual install of the latest Nvidia drivers 331.67 for my GTX 660. The only change i made in xorg.conf are adjusting the vertical and horizontal refresh rates and added a modeline according to my LCD TV specs. My LCD TV is connected to the VGA port. Also, I think i installed MESA and updated all the software but it did not do any good.

Here are more details on my system. Thanks for any reply:

Hi woodhead666

I ran the command dpkg -l | egrep 'flash|gnash|swf|spark' and this is the output:

ii flashplugin-installer 11.2.202.359ubuntu0.14.04.1 amd64 Adobe Flash Player plugin installer

Hope you can figure the problem. I looked every where, tried the MESA update, driver update and a few other thing i don't remember offhand but nothing did the trick.

Thanks so-much for for the reply!

Uninstall flashplugin-installer and enable the partner repo. You can then install the adobeflash-plugin package and then close all browsers. On rerunning it should be better.

Thanks again!

I think i had the partner repo option enabled in the Software Option but will try your recommendation as soon as i can.

At the moment i have a bigger problem : ) ... As a last resort I did a full software update last night with the beta repo enabled (not sure how they called that option) and it totally messed-up my Desktop Unity i think. Now when i login to desktop i only see a nice wallpaper... no toolbar no nothing. Ubuntu 14.04 sure does make life interesting. Just whish i had more time to work on those issues.

I at least still have tt1 and tt2 terminals but think i will reinstall Ubuntu all together (for the 3rd time). I already tried a few things to fix the Desktop last nigh and it probably be faster to just reinstall.

After all that i will let you know if your recommendation worked for the flash issue, thanks so much!

Hi actionparsnip,

Finally Flash works normally in all browsers. I think enabling the partner repo did the trick.

Beside that, the only other different thing i did after a fresh install is to use the tested 331.38 Nvidia drivers from the "Additional Drivers" instead of manually installing the latest one from Nvidia. After reboot i enabled the partner repos in Software & Updates and made sure that Pre-released updates was off.

After the update and reboot Flash was working like it should.

Thanks a bunch for your time and your help, really appreciated!
