loaded 8.04 from disc and wish to upgrade. can not access cd rom

I installed 8.04 from an old disc. Receive "failed to fetch" when attempting to update. Will not read disc (cdrom not recognized) . I had this problem about a year and a half ago ago and fixed it by wget but cant seem to find the information again.
I'm old and not very smart so please explain in English.

Ubuntu version 8.04 has been discontinued. It is out of date. You should install the most recent version 14.04.
If you have a less modern system, if would be a good idea to have a look at lubuntu or xbuntu. Both sister distributions are more suitable for older systems.

I suggest you wipe Hardy out and do a clean install of Trusty which is LTS and supported til April 2019.
