new message I don't understand

Asked by JOHN

I run Win7 on one hard drive and Ubuntu on another. I just cloned my C drive(Win7) on to a new Seagate SSHD. It starts up OK but after I select Win7 on GRUB, I get a blank purple screen for about 5 seconds and then this message:

error: no such device: 01CE9B73FC9FFOF70.
press any key to continue...

I have never seen this prior to the time I installed my newly cloned SSHD.

I press any key and carry on normally after that, so far. What is the meaning of this message?

John

If you run:

sudo update-grub; lsb_release -a; uname -a

What is the output please?

Thanks

I wish I could.

My troublesome desk top is in Houston and I'm in Albuquerque. It'll be a week before I get home. Stand by.

Strange events: When I started up my computer I went straight to Ubuntu and ran sudo update-grub; lsb_release -a; uname -a as you requested. I posted the output and then restarted the PC. When GRUB opened again, I realized that Windows 7 was missing
from the GRUB screen. I opened Ubuntu, Grub Customizer, and discovered that Windows 7 had been removed from the display.
Honest- I did not do it. I haven't opened Grub Customizer in months. I don't know if Win7 was missing on the first start-up as I had gone to get a cup of coffee and let the PC default to Ubuntu.
I restored Win7 to the GRUB display, restarted, and opened Win7 normally.

Somewhere in all this I realized that the original problem: error: no such device: 01... etc. is no longer showing up. Aside from fixing the GRUB display and installing a Windows update that was waiting in my PC, I have made no changes to my PC.
My PC has been unused for a week. I'm the only person with access to it.

How could the installation of the Windows update have fixed the error message and deleted Win7 from GRUB? Seems unlikely as Win7 and Ubuntu are on separate hard drives. The Ubuntu drive was not part of my cloning and I have not updated Ubuntu for nearly two weeks.

Well, for whatever reason, the PC is still working properly. Maybe just doing nothing for a week rested
it sufficiently to get back to normal.
Thanks for your help.
