Asked by Mike Cap

IBM/Lenovo Think-Pad R50e, 1.5C-GHz 2GB RAM Ubuntu 10.10
When I try to upgrade from bootable disk, to 12.10 or 13.10, I get folowing message:

pae
Unable to boot - please use a kernel appropriate for your CPU"

Ah, this won't work. There's a CPU feature called PAE that enabkles 32-bit CPU's to access more than 4gb ram. However, support for non-pae systems has been dumped. However, if you have a pentium or celeron M processor, this will work with a little modification. Is this an old system, andf do you know if you have a Pentium M or Celeron M?

Thanks,
Hamish

Take a look here

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PAE

All versions of Ubuntu now require a CPU that supports PAE (Peripheral Address Extension) but that link provides a work around.

Another option is to use a Linux distribution that doesn't use PAE - I can't help you there as this site is Ubuntu support only but If you post your computer specifications on the Ubuntu Forums http://ubuntuforums.org/

You should be able to get a recommendation. Lots of people on the Ubuntu Forums use other Linux Operating systems and their website guide lines don't limit them as much as this one does - We only support official Ubuntu variants that are still in support.

The place to post your question is here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=401

If you do decide to go with a non Ubuntu Linux however we wont be able to give you any support on this site or AskUbuntu but you can still get support on the Ubuntu forums, http://unix.stackexchange.com/ or the support channels for the version Linux you decide to install.

Can you help with this problem?
