Hi. What architecture do you have? Is it x86 or x86_64 (on 32-bit or on 64-bit)? If you have a 64-bit processor, you might encounter problems with apps that were made for 32-bit platforms. What type of package was Skype? Was it a .deb package?

Hello divya..

Following page has some info about skype on ubuntu

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Skype

Note: Just for your info,
for amd64 on gutsy try the following :

   1. Install 32-bit libraries: sudo aptitude install lib32asound2 ia32-libs-gtk ia32-libs-kde
   2. Download the Ubuntu package ([WWW] http://skype.com/download/skype/linux/)
   3. Install skype: sudo dpkg -i --force-architecture <the_package>
   4. Determine if missing any additional 32bit libs: ldd /usr/bin/skype | grep not
   5. Search and download the missing 32bit (i386) libs.
   6. Extract the downloaded *.deb files: dpkg-deb --extract <package> <targetdir>
   7. Copy the necessary library files from the extracted packages to /lib32: sudo cp -i <targetdir>/usr/lib/* /lib32/

points 4 to 7 is what makes it a little more complicated on a 64bit architecture.

use dpkg-deb --extract libqt4-core_4.3.2-0ubuntu3_i386.deb extractedfiles

then copy them to /lib32 as root : sudo cp -i extractedfiles/usr/lib/* /lib32/

For the 32 bit.. Refer the link above..

For Abiword

make sure you installed abiword-common as well from repo's.

http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/a/abiword/abiword_2.4.6-1.1ubuntu2_i386.deb

then click on the link and download it and double click that package which should install dependencies as well and it worked for me.
