Skype

Asked by woywoy

Having recently switched from WindowsXP to Ubuntu and am very satisfied with the change.
However, I do not seem to be able to install SKYPE which is very important to me.
Does Ubuntu not support Skype ?
Is there in that case another Linux OS which does ?
How to obtain this ?

Hello Ingvar,

Because Skype is proprietary software it does not exist in the Ubuntu software repositories. There is a third party software repository containing such software; Skype, GoogleEarth, libdvdcss2, w32codecs, w64codecs, etc.

Read the section "Adding the Repositories" on the following page to enable installing from the repository:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu

After running the required commands you're able to install Skype just like you would install any other application.

# sudo aptitude install skype
or
# sudo apt-get install skype

Good luck.
