I was trying to install Skype, then Software Center reported a critical bug and refused to start up.

Asked by Ryan S

I tried to install Skype for Linux, but when Software Center opened to install the program, it crashed and gave me this error:

E:Malformed line 60 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list (dist parse)

in an error report saying it was a serious bug that I should report. Now Software Center refuses to open, repeating the error message. I tried reinstalling Software Center via Terminal but it changed nothing.

And when I try to run it using

sudo -H software-center

it returns

AttributeError: 'NoneType' object has no attribute '__contains__'

right before returning me to the command line.

so there is an error in line 60, which is deb http://archive.canonical.com/ partner?

Run:

gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

Change:

deb http://archive.canonical.com/ partner
deb-src http://archive.canonical.com/ partner

To:

deb http://archive.canonical.com/ precise partner
deb-src http://archive.canonical.com/ precise partner

Save the new file, close gedit and run:

sudo apt-get update

Is it now smooth?
