When upgraded to 14.04 LTS, USB ports are not working

Asked by Calvin Jett Williams

I have an older laptop that I installed Ubuntu Desktop 13.10 on a few months ago, and everything was fine. I was using a Microsoft wireless keyboard and mouse that used a USB dongle/transceiver. It worked fine, that is, until I upgraded to Ubuntu Desktop 14.04 LTS. When it mounted the devices during installation, it mounted the HDD, CD-Rom drive, and the Serial, but when it mounted the USB ports, it stopped supporting my USB keyboards. I can not figure out how to get my USB dongle to work with my laptop now, so basically my $200 keyboard combo has become useless. I have to admit, I HATE the built-in keyboard and trackpad on the laptop, and I will go insane if I have to revert to using it.

You had better fix this soon, or I will talk negatively about you people to everyone and direct them away from Ubuntu. You had better fix my computer and get it running as it should.

Sincerely,
An Angry Customer

Hi Calvin,

we are all volunteers here, trying to help users for free in our free time. You are not really your customer. Also I want to remind you, that Ubuntu Linux as all Open Source Software comes without any warranty. There is no way you can DEMAND changes. And threatening us will bring you exactly nowhere.

If you, on the other hand, ask nicely for help, and you are helpful with additional information requests from us. We will most likely we able to solve your problem quickly.

As the first (optional) you can click the link"Edit question" on the top right and edit your question accordingly.

Then we are going to need some additional technical information about your problem. Please follow these steps:

1. unplug the keyboard / keyboard dongle from the computer
2. open the Terminal application (via the dash or Ctrl+Alt+T)
3. delete the kernel ring buffer with:
    sudo dmesg -c
This will ask for your users password and print a lot on theTerminal.
4. plug your keyboard in
5. wait 15 seconds
6. Run:
    dmesg
7. Run:
    lsusb
8. Copy the output text of both command for us. Thanks!

Set the USB ports to legacy mode enabled in BIOS too.

If you boot to 14.04 live CD, does the USB work ok?

I am sorry for the threats. I was just really mad when I first posted this.

Also, I will have to do the terminal thing later, because the laptop is dead and it takes a year and a day to charge the stupid battery on the thing.

Also, when booting to 14.04 Live CD, the USB ports work, yet it still does not recognize my dongle.

I was not clear in my first post-

the USB ports work fine, but it no longer recognizes my dongle.

The other command is lsusb (with lower-case L).

So far it looks like the video driver has crashed. Do you have, by accident, an external display connected? Some Intel card are having trouble when something is connected at boot time.

Also this crash should produce an error report in Ubuntu. You should send a report, so the bug can get fixed. Thanks!

I reverted to Ubuntu 13.10 when I posted that. Also, yes, I do have an external display connected, a 20" Acer AL2216W. I sold my old keyboard and mouse at a garage sale and bought wired ones, and that seemed to fix the issue.
