Open listening ports vis transmission

Asked by Rick Miller

Hey:

I have no ports 'open" when using transmission. What must I do to open listening ports?

All ports are open in a default install of Ubuntu. Unless you star messing with ufw or iptables there is no restrictions on traffic in either direction.

Andrew:

Hope you had a good Easter. Finally, our weather here was pleasant and one could get out and enjoy.

Ahhmm..when I checked the listening port(s) in transmission, it reports the ports are closed? So, what now? Did you see the 'command" I posted in my earlier correspondence? If so, what do you think about it?

THANX:
Rick

If you port forward the ports on your router it should help. Torrents will still work.

Morning:

Ok, lol-lol, how do I "port forward"? This may seem trivial to you, but I've been reading/re-reading many an article concerning transmission bittorrent and well, I've got to say, they are somewhat confusing and often contradictive. Perhaps you know of a site/tutorial that would be of help? What do you think of this command [sudo iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport ( insert port # here) -j ACCEPT]? I found this while serching through an Ubuntu forum. BTW, what is a common port number to use? I've read some sites "block" 51413 (which is default). As always, your help is appreciated.
THANX:
Rick

Addendum to previous post:

Today, I tried 4 torrents. All of which are indicating "idle". 2 of these torrents were of high seed to leech ratio. , I tried to d/l one @ 140/83. It would not even load??? Removed TBT(Transmission BitTorrent) for today. will re-install tomorrow. Anyone wish to comment on this latest "failure"? [HP2000-210us 12.04LTS TBT(latest version -as far as I know)]

tonight I tried 2 torrents. One with a 140/83 peer to leech ratio, another 116/81. Both "opened" idle and have stayed that way. (These were torrents posted within the last month)

ANYONE:

For far too long now, I've been asking for help with "port" forwarding. I've read too many tutorials/forums/how-to sites which has only lead to confusion and frustration. It IS NOT/CANNOT be such a difficult process. I would like directions from anyone who has executed this procedure and/or help in getting the problem 'fixed". Has anyone else had to do this procedure in transmission (TBT) or within Ubuntu 12.04? [HP2000-210us Ubuntu 12.04 Transmission BitTorrent (TBT)

The default settings will work. You can port forward in your router but you dont need to mess with iptables as all traffic is allowed by default.

Andrew and ANYONE

What am I missing? Look, when I go into transmission bittorrent and check, it says the ports are closed? You tell me I don't need to do anything, someone else says I must do "port forward"??? Now I'll ask, what 'commands" must I execute to "port forward". I've posted a few that I've found, but NO ONE has commented. And PLEASE, let's keep it simple!!
Thank You:
RICK

ANYONE:

Been perusing new threads. I would like to know why Ubuntu can't seem to get it right? Every since 10.4, I've noticed how many folks must dik around with a new O.S to get WiFi, which should be out-of-the-box ready. Would really like to hear opinions! Am still waiting for direct, simple answers to post #9, as well.
Thank You:
Rick

2 weeks now and no replies. WOW, my mistake for thinking this was a site for helping fellow Linux/Ubuntu users. (?)

Thanx Anyways:
