Display dims and locks

This seems to be an old issue, butI'm new to Ubuntu, so... I've installed Ubuntu on my outdate Toshiba m45 s269, and at times the display dims and locks. It may be a Flash player issue. I cannot find a BIOS update for this machine. Is there a solution to this problem, or is my laptop just too old?
