how to re-install ubuntu from boot up

Asked by bigj130

i messed up my screen resoultion, and dident back up any of my files...
I did this alot of times, and they dont support my laptop that is a Preario V2000...
I guess i messed with the settings to make it close to my screen size, got one very close, but i wanted it perfect like it was when i last re-installed ubuntu from a cd.
I changed the resoultion to a bigger size then my screen, and made it were it will only boot into the terminal like thing. and i log in, then my password, in the termanle, and thats it.. I dont know what to do...

Im bad at keeping up on my cds, i always loos them, this time, i organized my cds in this case, and my ubuntu cd was in there... And i lost the case.. cant find it any were, there goes my ubuntuy, wow, and etc.

so is there a way to back up my files into a flash drive, and then re-install not by cd, if at lease 6 weeks go by, then i wont need help..
The cd from UK to USA texas will be here...

And i still, if six weeks went by, i want to know if you could back up my files into a flash drive from the terminal..

Oh yea, im on my vista computer! (YUCK!)
:)

Hello,

The easiest way to backup is using the LiveCD instead of learning to use the command line for backups. If it is possible, you can download and burn your own Ubuntu CD instead of waiting for the pressed disk to arrive.

No problem, just stating that it is the easier option. Basically what you need to do is mount your file systems, then copy the files that you want to back up to your flash drive.

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Mount will describe mounting filesystems.
https://help.ubuntu.com/7.10/basic-commands/C/ covers the basic commands that you will need/want to use.

Let us know if you run into problems.

Also, if you have a large enough USB memory stick, and your computer supports booting from USB, you can run/install from that using https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/FromUSBStick

I recently used isotostick.sh to install this way on my EeePC
