Shutdown , logout not working, fan running all the time

Asked by Kevin S

Just switched from XP to Ubuntu . The fan is now running all the time .The computer wont go into standby anymore.
When selecting shutdown the screen ends up blank with the computer still running along with the fan.
Selecting log out to change users creates the same situation as above ie left without the screen and computer still running .
In all the above I then have to use the power button on the computer to close down and restart as the keyboard does nothing.
Selecting restart from unity does work , so I'm lost as to what is going on , and don't want to continue to have to shutdown using the power button , cos with the fan running all the time I'm not sure if the hard drive is still running .

Don't know if my hardware is shown anywhere . Compaq presario s 6010AN about 10 years old . Is running very well with ubuntu except above . I'm not a very technical user and struggled to follow and implement some of the suggestions i read re the above problem , so I'm needing a simple step by step ( including the use of terminal and code entry ) if the problem is something that I can fix this end thanks .

Have you tried the Unity2D session. This is selectable on the login screen.

Thanks

Seems to be an Intel GPU. Have you tried the Intel driver installer? Omgubuntu.co.uk has a link to it.

Have tried Unity 2D along with Gnome Classic no effects , Lxde desktop. Also originally tried Lubuntu, Xubuntu installed with Wubi within xp . In all cases shutdown didn't work . Originally I thought that it may have just been because of running Off XP file systems , so as I was happy with Ubuntu , I reinstalled only Ubuntu 12.04 LTS as the only OS , doing away with windows completely, however the same problem still exists .

Have now noticed quite a few postings from the past similar problems .

Not sure about driver installers etc or checking updating BIOS , that someone else mentioned .

The computer powered down and went into standby fine with XP . Have never had any past problems with it .

I like the increase in speed using the Classic de over XP . Unity 2D is about the same as XP in terms of speed responsiveness . Unity 3D didn't run well . LXDE is also very responsive , so I would like to get the power down , logging out changing users working .

Went for the LTS version of Ubuntu as had been advised that it should have worked fine regarding drivers etc , so excuse me for asking why you think that might help .

Thanks

Just because a release is LTS doesn't mean it is "ok for drivers". It means there is more package testing and the release is supported longer with very rare new addition of features.

This may help

Not the graphics drivers . May be the BIOS needs updating, but that is beyond me at this stage .
Whats happening is not consistant ie sometimes it stops at the splash screen on shut down , and sometimes it comes up with a black screen saying process halted.

There are a lot of similar problems showing up with others in the past , so I think that to move from XP to linux requires a bit more than the average user can easily deal with . Its a shame that much of the info is fragmented and not put together in a way that is easily understood and implemented by the likes of me, as I can see the potential in terms of performance with linux , but have to way that up against the time it takes to get things sorted out.

I'll just put up with the shutdown problem in the short term until I decide what to do going forward with my hardware and OS .

Can you help with this problem?
