64-bit Ubuntu / Kubuntu 1310 installation freezes

Asked by Bruce Edwards

Hi there

I have tried to install 64-bit editions of both Ubuntu and Kubuntu on my desktop PC but on both attempts from DVD or USB installations they freeze shortly after I select to boot from DVD/USB. It gets to the Choose Language page and then freezes.

Both the USB Keyboard and USB Mouse do not light up at this point although they both did previously work on choosing the installation method or in my UEFI BIOS.
(USB Keyboard - Zalman, USB Mouse - HP, both corded devices)

I have enabled the USB Legacy Support option in the BIOS.

The 32-bit editions both run the Try Me options ok and I can use the mouse / keyboard as normal and browse the desktop as normal.

Can some one shed light as to the issue?

My system is
AMD 8320
16GB DDR3 RAM
ATI 6850 GPU
Gigabyte Mobo
256GB Corsair SSD (currently has Win8 installed)

Thanks in advance.

Try the boot option:

radeon.nomodeset=1

May help

Thanks actionparsnip

I am a total newbie with Linux so bare that in mind.

I booted to the Ubuntu DVD and pressed F6 which gave me some options to choose. At which point I chose 'Nomodeset' and then booted Ubuntu but the same thing happened. Just freezes on the choose language screen. I noted that i got 2 error messages on doing this though - both stating ' error unable to enumerate USB port 2' and then repeated again for port 3, which probably means the USB keyboard/mouse. I don't have any other USB devices connected.

I also noted this, i have 2 options to boot my DVD - UEFI or Legacy. On booting Legacy I simply get a black screen. On booting UEFI it boots through to the Choose Language selection then freezes.

Any ideas? Sorry I don't know how to type radeon.nomodeset=1 - where do i type this?

Try Ubuntu 14.04, 13.10 has very little support left (a few weeks). The newer release may help

Hi actionparsnip

Appears to be a motherboard issue!

Plugging the mouse and keyboard into the USB3 ports works fine but my NIC fails to work properly...anyone another issue but thanks again.
