Entering ASCII codes on the keyboard?

Asked by HES

I wish to know if there is a way of entering the ASCII codes on the keyboard to get , for example a 1/2 or 1/4 (171 or 172), in the text of Open Office or Evolution?

From the ubuntu forum:

Under GNOME you can press Ctrl+Shift+U and then write the wanted Unicode character in hexadecimal.

You can do it in two ways:
1. Press Ctrl+Shift+U and release them all, then write the hex code and finally press Space.
2. Press Ctrl+Shift+U and release U, then write the hex code and release Ctrl+Shift

It doesn't matter whether you use left or right Ctrl+Shift, both of them should work.

On my system that produces ű and Ų. For the 1/2 and 1/4 I can use the right alt key combined with 6 for ¼ and the right alt key combined with 7 for ½.

You can use ctrl+shift=U then the code. Example ctrl+shift+U40 = @

Yes this answers my question. However, when I try the right Alt with the 6 or 7 I get this; . If I hit the 40 after the Ctrl Shift U I get the @ sign, as an answer from williamts99 wrote following the above from albert. I obviously have the wrong ASCII codes, because 40 is a ( on my old ASCII list. That certainly isn't your problem. Thank you both so very much.
