dual display for xu Precise Pangolin 12.04

Asked by Galen Thurber

hoping to get Precise Pangolin 12.04 LT Xubuntu running dual displays, on VGA (CRT) the other smart tv via HDMI.
as soon as xu goes to login screen I lose DVI to HDMI connection.
Other distros, sparky, mint, puppy all work fine with dual display

I run nvidia 173 on a nv34 video card
/0/100/b/0 display NV34 [GeForce FX 5200]

nvidia config does not show a second display

If you run :

nvidia-settings

And use the 'detect display' button does it jump into life. You may have to press it a few times

no button for nvidia-setting
but on exit reports

The program 'nvidia-settings' received an X Window System error.

This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadRequest (invalid request code or no such operation)'.
  (Details: serial 286 error_code 1 request_code 140 minor_code 29)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

sudo nvidia-setting --sync
