Failed to get size of gamma for output default

Asked by Barry Martin

I have just bought a new desktop PC and want to set up my TV as a second monitor in Ubuntu, with TV also as audio output. The TV is not listed under display or sound devices. I tried command xrandr --query and I get error message "failed to get size of gamma for output default."The specifications for my hardware are:
Zalman 64-bit PC upgrade box 1Tb with 8 Gb RAM
Radeon HD R7 Graphics
Samsung 19.5” monitor
Sony Bravia 42” TV
HDMI cable 5m high speed.
And it's dual boot operating systems: Ubuntu 13.04 and Windows 8.1. Having TV as primary monitor with audio has been successfully set up in Windows.

I've tried an internet search for this error message. It gets a lot of mentions, but I'm having difficulty making sense of the answers or suggestions. Although I've been an Ubuntu user for a couple of years now, I haven't had to bother with the details of monitors and speakers before now. I hadn't heard of xrandr before today!

Ubuntu 13.04 is EOL and no longer supported in any way. I suggest you upgrade to Saucy or even better a clean install of Trusty which is LTS and supported til April 2019. It is prerelease now but is due out in a few weeks

Can you help with this problem?
