Unable to fully install or launch most current version of iTunes

Asked by Bill Flewelling

I've been trying to replace iTunes on my system ever since I moved to Ubuntu 12.04 LTS from Windows XP. After downloading the ITunes 11.1.5 installer file from the Apple website, I've tried several times to complete the installation via Wine. iTunes then seemingly installs correctly, but displays only an error message when I try to launch it. Is there a package or other Ubuntu configuration update I need to do, or is this version of iTunes just incompatible with 12.04 LTS?

It doesn't work well at all. Using Apple stuff with Ubuntu is still problematic and IMHO, best avoided. You could use a virtual system with Windows installed to accommodate the shortcomings of Apple's support.

I hear Banshee / Rhythmbox will help you put media on the iDevice but it will not communicate to Apple's iStore as that requires a proprietary protocol / encryption / something and Apple refuse to support Linux.

I suggest you avoid Apple stuff and go with Android devices. They play well with Linux.

The only Apple stuff I use...is iTunes, and then only because they have
more of all my favourite genres and will let me pay with my debit card.
I just want to buy and download music, copy it to my Music folder in
Ubuntu and then to my Nokia phone via Nokia Suite, which I *was* able to
install and get to work via Wine.

Thanks!

Then you'll need to dual boot or run Windoes in a VM.

Then that's the end of that. Part of the price I have to pay to be rid of Windows.
