14.04 NO Network with Mobile Broadband

Asked by Robby

I downloaded the 14.04 server (minimual) install, it installed perfectly, including the network and downloading files. However upon reboot, I have NO network at all. I'm using mobile broadband for my internet. I have spent three days, and downloading two different daily builds, all with no luck. I spent two days running every troubleshooting command, (iwconfig, ifconfig, lshw -c network, etc...). All I could find out is that the computer was looking for an ip address of 127.168.0.1, however the phone's are using 10.74.148.26. When I try to change the address with the "ip address add" command", I get "expecting network address" error. I have changed the /etc/network/interfaces.list file, the /etc/modprobe.d" file, /etc/rc.local, etc/init.d/networking, and several others.

Finally this morning I realized that Network Manager did not install correctly (or not at all), with no network at all, I had to reboot into my 13.10 and download the Network Manager .deb, place it in the 14.10 /home/ folder. Then trying to install with dpkg, I kept getting errors of "file not found". I went back and downloaded, gdebi, synaptic, and the Mobile-Broadband-Provider-Info .deb, as dpkg showed it wasn't installed either.

I have tried to use "service network-manager stop", then ifup, ifdown and whatever else I could think of. Nothing has worked. I tried to reboot into the installer cd and use the "rescue" portion, hopefully to be able to install something, that didn't work either. I would place the output of the system commands here, but since this is my 13.10 instead of the 14.04, I can't hardly copy and paste. There is NO existing internet connection at all, ifconfig, iwconfig and all those see the phone connected with usb, but still can't access the internet.

I have tried two Samsung and on LG phones, using Wlan0, usb0, and eth0 connections, none of them will work. I am so ready to give up and just donwload the whole DVD. But, I am really wanting to build this custom.

Can someone give me some direction? I'll boot back over and hand copy output of commands, and edit them in here. If someone has anything easier, or need more information, then just let me know.

Is this a bug, or just an isolated problem.

I suggest you report a bug. Trusty is not ready and not stable.
