If you are "getting various error mesages", please post them here that we can see them. They probably contain information that is necessary to identify the root cause of your problem.

Please open a terminal window (e.g. by simultaneously pressing ctrl-alt-t) and issue the following commands:

lsb_release -a
uname -a
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install skype

then copy all output and paste into this question document.

No personal experience here as I don't use either but there is a guide to installing skype here

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Skype

And a guide to installing Opera in Ubuntu 13.10 here:

http://www.unixmen.com/install-opera-12-16-ubuntu-13-10/

If neither of these work post any error messages you get.

It is not normal that there is no output for the "sudo apt-get update" command.

Please provide the output of the following terminal commands:

groups
which apt-get
dpkg -l apt
cat -n /etc/apt/sources.list

Hi All thank you all for your help and advice. Now both are installed and working ok. I deleted all files relevant to both programmes. I then downloaded again, installed them. This time both installed ok.
