Cannot play midi files

Asked by nLIter

Hi
I have never been able to play my midi files that I have downloaded with Windows. Kmid tells me it can't open /dev/sequencer.
Amaroc and Caffein can't recognize the midi format.

The only way I can overcome this problem, is to convert the midi files to Wav or MP3 with a Windows File Converter program and copy them to Ubuntu.

Does any one know how Kmid or either Amaroc or Caffein can be configured to play Windows-downloaded midi files directly?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

MIDI, unfortunatlely is not an open file format, so Ubuntu does not support it by defualt. You can enable midi support using EasyUbuntu.

Installation instructions are found at http://easyubuntu.freecontrib.org/HtmlDocs/ch02.html

Note: For the second last step, don't type "sudo python ./easyubuntu.in". Just type "python ./easyubuntu.in" (without the sudo)

Hi Munchkinguy,
I followed your suggestion on how to install Easy Ubuntu, applying the instuctions given in http:/easyubuntu.freecontrib.org/HtmlDocs/ch02.htm.

I was not successful with the installation. It seems that some of the commands don't work.
In Konqueror. <wget. http:/users.on.net/~goetz/EasyUbuntu/current.tar.bz2> is rejected as a malformed URL. However, by omitting <wget> the file downloads.
Also, you were right in suggesting to omit 'sudo' in the <sudo.python ./easyubuntu.in.

I would kindly ask the people who have written the instructions in the above site, to correct them.

Anyway, I did download Easy Ubuntu by going to the alternative setup that is found in <http://easyubuntu.freecontrib.org/
I downloaded the .deb file which in turn, I Installed automatically with 'gdebi' (the Debian Installer).

Easy Ubuntu was installed and is running, but I stil can,t play midi files. I get a message like: 'Error running Sequencer' or "could not open /dev/sequencer, in Kmid.
Installing 'aconnectgui' (Graphical ALSA Sequencer Connection Manager) didn't do any good.
I get: 'Error opening Sequencer'
I hope my detailed discription of the installation for Easy Ubuntu, may help other people who have a simillar problem.

Thanks again.
I did appreciate your help,
Don

Hello williamts99,
Thank you for your suggestion to install Easy Ubuntu. I did have some
success, but although I was able to install almost every software included, I
still have a problem playing Midi files. (see my comment to Munchkinguy),

The site you suggested, (http://easyubuntu.freecontrib.org/) is very good
for newbies like me.
Downloading the Easy Ubuntu.deb file was really the best way to get this
wonderful software.

Now, here is the problem: When I go to the System menu to install the
Repositoriy list,
I get the following message:

'The following problems were found on your system'

W: GPG error: http://easyubuntu.cafuego.net main Release: The following
signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available:
NO_PUBKEY 580E2519969F3F57
W: GPG error: http://packages.freecontrib.org dapper Release: The following
signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available:
NO_PUBKEY F120156012B83718

Could this be the reason I was not able to set up the Midi program in Easy
Ubuntu?
Any suggestions?
Thanks again, your help will be greatly appreciated.

Hello Will,
I tried your last suggestion today. I still can't get Easy Ubuntu to support Midi.
When I first opened the progam, I noticed that all items in the first tab were checked to be installed by default, but there was no checkmark in the 'Midi' box.
Maybe I have a bad installation to begin with. So I won't try anything anymore.
Please consider my request closed.
Thank you very much for your eagerness to help.

You should run the installation with that check box checked :-)

Also there are online converters to convert midi files to mp3 or wav that are free if that might offer you enough of a workaround. That is one thing that really bothers me about non open formats. Hopefully though if you run that again with the box checked it might work for you.

Grrrr I hate non-free formats :-)

Thanks Will,
I will try to re-install Easy Ubuntu. I do have, by the way, a midi to wav
or mp3 converter. But it's a lot of work converting midi files
individually. It means having to play the whole file in the Mp3 recorder and
then do the conversion afterwards. This can only be done in Windows. Then,
of course, I can transfer the Mp3 files to my Ubuntu/Kubuntu disk partition
using a USB flash stick.

But, guess what. All of my USB ports in the PC stopped working suddenly. Now
I have another problem in my hands.

Greetings, Don

Will convert it for you online, just have to upload the midi to them. No need to download or use any software, I believe that there are a few other sites that will do it as well, but google is your friend :-)

Hello Will,
Many, many dankeschoens for your help. Ya , your suggestion is maybe the
best way to convert midi files to Mp3 on line.
Well, here´s some news you might be interested to hear about.
I downloaded Linux Mint 2.0 which is Ubuntu 6.0 Edgy. Well, I am really
impressed.
This distro has already everything that Easy Ubuntu has, installed right
off the box.
www.Lin Telligence.de is the mirror where I just got my download. The Linux
Mint people just copied Ubuntu Edgy and added extras to it. Itś amazing,
but I have not tried to see if midi files are supported.
I will let you know.
Tanks again, Don

Back again Will,
I just downloaded a midi file from the Mozart archives and heard it being
played in Linux, having installed first the Mplayer and the mozilla plugins
for it.
Amazing! It works!

Hi Will,
I'd like to let you know that Ifound an easier way to play midi files.

Installed Timidity from Synaptic.

To use it, I right- click on a midi file to be played and in the menu that appears,(Open with) I select 'other'.

In the 'Open with' command line I type Timidity.
Then I checkmark the box : Remember application association for this type of file.

From then on a midi file plays by just clicking on it.
