removing (or adding) program to startup in linux (ubuntu)

Asked by don lawhead

Running on acer aspire. dual boot system with win7 and ubuntu 13.1. Would like to stop gnome-screensaver from starting or loading at startup. I am running xscreensaver and they conflick. xscreensaver will not run if gnome-screensaver is runnng. I have tried to remove gnome-screensaver using apt.-get remove but it removes needed portions of gnome and causes other problems in system operations. I have to totally remove and reinstall gnome to fix this problem. Is it possible to remove the gnome-screensaver portion from the startup of the system. Was (am) sorry to see the ubuntu side of screensaver go away. It had some handy options I could use.

If possible please respond to
