Replacement for LibreOffice 3.6.2 Bug ridden

Asked by Royalist

There is wide acclaim concerning this version as being not fit for purpose. I am trying to find a reliable alternative version.

Should I move backward to perhaps 3.5.?

Comments please!

Thanks, but I would prefer to stay with LibreOffice for the time being. It is just a case of choosing a reliable version other than the one that comes with the Ubuntu 12.10 package. i.e. 3.6.2

Have you tried renaming the libreoffice configuration file then relaunching it. You will then get vanilla settings. It may help

No I haven't. I have just finished purging the system of libre office so there will be no config file. Is it not just simply possible to find a bug free version and if necessary just download it and do an sh install, as there does not appear to be anything available with <<apt-get>> etc; other than 3.6.2 .
It seems that there are versions available as high as 4.5.?, without any indication of reliability. There is no point in going "from the fire into the frying pan" .

No this does not remove the config files, all you have done is remove the application data then put it right back in. Removing a package does not remove the user config folder(s) in $HOME.

You needed to run:

rm -r ~/.config/libreoffice

Then run the application.

Thanks for that, you are right: -

<<$ ls -l ~/.config/libreoffice/
total 4
drwx------ 3 roy roy 4096 Mar 14 17:24 3>>

I have not re-installed libreoffice.

I don't understand the figure 3 returned by 'ls' as it seems that there three items below but no directory/filenames are returned. I am missing something here.

Please will you explain how the removal of these subs will prevent the same bugs recurring when libreoffice is re-installed? The bugs that I have been experiencing, have been widespread elsewhere bu other users of libre office 3.6.2

The command I gave will remove the file, when you launch the application you will get default settings

I do realise that, but this implies that I, and numerous others have
caused the same problem and experienced the same faults in the first place.

What I want is to be able to install, perhaps an earlier version which
was stable.

Are you saying that you know for a fact that version 3.6.2 is bug free?

If a certain program version has bugs, I do not expect that going back to an earlier release will make the bugs disappear, but bugs usally are solved with later versions with higher version numbers.

What Ubuntu release are you currently running? 12.10 Quantal?

In that case the LibreOffice version provided in the standard Ubuntu repositories is 3.6.2. But there are PPAs with higher version numbers, e.g. https://launchpad.net/~libreoffice/+archive/libreoffice-4-0?field.series_filter=quantal with version 4.0.4

Remark: Don't miss to plan for an upgrade to a higher Ubuntu release, as Quantal is scheduled to receive "End Of Life" status in April.
Ubuntu 14.04 would provide LibreOffice 4.2.1. Maybe with that version the bugs that you experience are already solved.

Can you help with this problem?
