XU 13.10 hard lockups on acer laptop extensa 5620

since upgrading from LTS to XU 13.04 & then XU 13.10 the acer laptop is experiencing frequent hard lockups.
one source of lockup has been GL screensaver, so I turned it off. Still the lockups happen
Power management for AC is also off.
The laptop does not run too hot, and the lid is up

Is there a daemon that can catch the source of the lockups?

I'm installing gnome system log viewer and are there log search terms to quickly find the trouble?

I've checked the system with chkrootkit but it has a fatal flaw

Checking `aliens'... /bin/egrep: /dev/.bootchart/proc/sysrq-trigger: Input/output error

If you make a new Ubuntu user, is it the same?
Have you tested your RAM using Memtest86+ from Grub?

yes my hardware is tested often, memtest, hard disk test.
I'll be trying psensors and logging for anything overheating.
I'll try a new user

still testing, seeing if I can cause a crash.
I monitored temperature sensor data while running heavy CPU usage
and running "crashme"
no crashes.
The main user's session will lockup when idle as well. very hard to pinpoint where the problem is

other user crashes as well, escpecially on GL screensaver.

Crash hard lockup gives venetian blinds effect

so same Laptop is not locking up under Linux Mint 15, but I have tested it fully.

Is there a GL test program compatible with Xubuntu,
or just run gxlgears and wait for a lockup?

linux mint 15 MATE is not locking up
kernel 3.8.0
seems like ever since XU went to kernel 3.10 3.11 the lockups have been an issue.

where should I file a bug report?
