ubuntu-desktop on server

Asked by Ramy Al-AShram

I have successfully installed Ubuntu server 7.10, I would like to get GUI on that server.
I also have the ubuntu-desktop cd, it was sent it to me by mail from ubuntu website for free, and i edit the source.list on the server to get the update from the CD not from the internet

but each time i run "sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop"

i get an error message "Couldn't not find package ubuntu-desktop"

could any one help me in this issue in details

Sincerely

If you install and are not connected to the internet it makes your sources list not work. Use this command and copy and paste the result to this site: sudo vim /etc/apt/sources.list

Hello Ramy..

Refer this article to enable extra repositories in ubuntu 7.10..

http://www.arsgeek.com/?p=2794

after getting all the required repositories enabled

Type the following command in a terminal (applications -> accessories -> terminal)

sudo aptitude install ubuntu-desktop

Hope that helps

Bhavani Shankar.

then save the file.. If you are using vim, to save a file do..

n Normal mode, type : (that's a colon) to get to the vi command-line. Your cursor will be placed at the bottom of the screen after a colon. The following commands are used on the command-line to save the file and quit the program.
w Write (Save)
q Quit (Close)
wq Write and Quit. (Save and Close)
q! Force Quit (Close without saving changes)

Just as an afterthought, you may consider using nano. Still a console application but a bit more user-friendly.

do

sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list (to open sources.list)

Then delete everything and copy and paste the text below..
