VLC media player fails to launch, fbosd interface error?

VLC is installed. when I launch from the command line I get this text
VLC media player 2.0.8 Twoflower (revision 2.0.8a-0-g68cf50b)
[0x1a76d48] fbosd interface error: cannot open /dev/fb0 (Permission denied)
[0x1a76d48] main interface error: no suitable interface module
[0x1838108] main libvlc error: interface "default" initialization failed

any help appreciated

Then I suggest you contact the PPA maintainer to report the issue. Alternatively you can use ppa-purge to roll back to the vlc from the official Ubuntu repo which is tested and known to work with Ubuntu.

Removed ppa, still no go. as per output below
(I originally installed ppa in the hope that its installation would 'fix' the problem which already existed)

PPA to be removed: videolan stable-daily
Package revert list generated:

ok, I simply deleted the user config file (: $(HOME)/.config/vlc/vlcrc )and restarted. Works now thanks
